It’s a car! No, it’s an SUV. Er, it’s the BMW X1. BMW India finally put their official seal on the commencement of the BMW X1′s Indian sojourn by launching the Sports Activity Vehicle in India. The BMW X1 is neither a full fledged sedan nor a full grown SUV. It is what automobile designers call, a Crossover. A result of a cross between a sedan and an SUV, the BMW X1 Crossover is well, nigh, perfect for the road conditions we live in. Most folks who travel a lot in their cars and who want an executive sedan in India go through a buying process that often results in them buying an SUV instead. One reason: The moonscapish Indian road conditions. While successive prime ministers of the country have done a lot to improve the roads we traverse on, a large part of the nation still plays host to not so good roads on which sedans usually come to a crawling speed, lest the underbody take mighty and often expensive hits.
An SUV makes so much sense in such situations but considering the outright performance, fuel efficiency and driving pleasure which simply cannot match what a sedan has to offer, SUVs too have their drawbacks. It is here that the crossovers come in and act as the perfect compromise between the finesse of a sedan and the ruggedity of an SUV. What better than the BMW badge on the bonnet? This is where the BMW X1 comes in, a high performance teutonic Crossover with the performance and more importantly snob value of being a BMW. With the BMW X1, you can go flat out on rough roads where you would otherwise have had to slow to a standstill in a sedan and with the BMW X1, you can still navigate the very slushy and mucky roads bang in the midde of the monsoons leading to your farmhouse. All this, without having to sacrifice a refined diesel engine’s frugality, brilliant cornering that let’s you chase sedans on the twisties and a sub ten second nought to hundred dash.2011 BMW X1 CrossoverThis, in a nutshell is the BMW X1, which is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The anaemic petrol variant, in our opinion is only for folks who simply cannot be seen refueling at the dirty end of the fuel pumps and trust us, there are quite a few of them. For the rest of the folks, there is the brilliant inline, four pot, two liter common rail diesel mill that goes fast, stays ultra refined and sips the sticky stuff very stingily. And to top it all off, the BMW X1 in diesel guise is one of those rare cars which comprehensively beats the petrol version in almost all departments, right from the power and torque figures, significantly faster nought to hundred dash to the more miles per liter stakes. Already 1000 Indians have booked, rather pre-booked this very car and this will ensure that a waiting period of three months will ensue before you can lay your hands on your very own BMW 2011 BMW X1 CrossoverAnd yes, the prices remain just what we reported earlier. No surprises there with the BMW India launching the X1 at very competitive prices with the BMW X1 sDrive18i at INR 22,00,000, the BMW X1 sDrive20d at INR 23,90,000 and the BMW X1 sDrive 20d Exclusive at INR 29,90,000, all prices ex-showroom all India. The BMW X1 will be built from Completely Knocked Down Kits imported from BMW Germany and this is one of the main reasons as to how BMW has managed to price the X1 Crossover so competitively. BMW India is pinning it’s hopes on the 2011 BMW X1 becoming the best selling model in it’s Indian line up and looking at the tremendous response the X1 has received so far in India, that is something very plausible.
